January 10, 2021 - 1st Sunday after Epiphany - The Baptism of Our Lord
"Ancient Religions, New Faiths" - Rev. Seth D. Jones
Scripture: Gen 1:1-5; Acts 19:1-7; Mark 1:4-11
Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the welcoming of the personhood of God who guides us to experience directly the presence of God in the Creation. For a while, it was possible to be baptized into John's baptism - a baptism of repentance and forgiveness of sins - and not be baptized into the Holy Spirit. This is what happens with Paul and the new converts in Ephesus. But we need to understand Ephesus to understand what the Holy Spirit is up to there.
Enjoy the service!
Peace, Pastor Seth

December 24, 2020 - CHRISTMAS EVE
A Celebration with Lessons and Carols - "In Darkness, Light; In Absence, Christ"
Normally, we would have gathered in the sanctuary for our Christmas Eve service. But 2020 and the pandemic has created new realities for all of us. So this year, with the help of our Music Director, Scott Dyer, and several musicians, and many people in the church, we have pre-recorded parts of the service and it has been woven into a video for our celebration.

December 20, 2020 - 4th Sunday of Advent
"Let It Be Unto Me, According to the Word of the Angels" - Rev. Seth Jones
Scripture: Romans 16:25-27; Luke 1:26-38
As we get closer to Christmas day, we focus on Jesus' mother, Mary. Mary is held up in other traditions more than she is in ours. I think this is a mistake. Hopefully, today's talk makes it clear why. Thank you to Scott and Paul for the wonderful music today, and to Barbara for reading for us as well.

"Darkness Into Light - Divine Waiting" - Rev. Seth Jones
Scripture: Isaiah 40:1-9; 2 Peter 3:8-15a; Mark 1:1-8
Today, we tried to engage our ability to not know what is coming when the light is appearing. This requires encountering the darkness, yet seeking the light at the same time. This helps us break out of cliched ways of thinking about God's timing. I used an example from the Vendee Globe sailing race, which is happening now.

"Clawing at the Clouds of Heaven" - Rev. Seth Jones
Scripture: Isaiah 64:1-9; 1 Corinthians 1:3-9; Mark 13:24-39
This morning, we began the Advent season with an acknowledgment that we all know something about waiting. If we didn't before the pandemic, we do now. Waiting can be frustrating. And waiting is part of the Biblical witness to the coming of the Kingdom of God. Advent is the season of the church where we learn how to wait.
We also celebrated the Lord's Supper this morning.
